The Erotic Art of Schiele: “I Believe in the Immortality of all Creatures”

“I do not deny that I have made drawings and watercolors of an erotic nature. But they are always works of art. Are there no artists who have done erotic pictures?” - Egon Schiele

In what has turned into an ongoing blog-series celebrating artists who embody a nymphobrainiac ideal (the merging of intellectual and erotic mindfulness) I am returning to Egon Schiele. An Austrian painter whose body of work was completed in the early 20th century, yet still continues to repel and enthrall today.

His work has that dialectic quality. It is not “pretty” to the eye; the lines are jilted and simplistic, the colors splotchy and garish,

and…real.

When Schiele painted the human form he actually captured aspects of the human condition:

Nude. Awkward. Sexual. Emotional. Twisted.

His figures looked like people who had lived…a difficult life…a quality captured in the very lines that “confined” their twisted shapes.

There is something almost intrusive about his painting…as if you just walked in on someone masturbating…they feel personal, intimate; as if they are still possessed by the subjects, and we are intruding on their moment.

All of these characteristics make Schiele’s work timeless and addictive. I have never looked at one Schiele image, only many.

Schiele’s personal life mirrored the non-conformity depicted in his art. He often shacked-up with underage delinquents in a kind of commune-style living arrangement and was eventually arrested for seducing a girl under the age of consent; however, after appearing before a judge, he was found innocent.

Schiele’s relationship with his mother was strained:

“My mother is a very strange woman… She doesn’t understand me in the least and doesn’t love me much either. If she had either love or understanding she would be prepared to make sacrifices.”

With this in mind, Schiele’s salacious depictions of women appear to reflect an unconscious and twisted (really maladaptive) wish for intimacy…love.

His self-portraits almost always portrayed a nude, contorted, pained Schiele…

Theories abound about Schiele’s “overly-close” relationship with his sister (Gerti) implying incest, which was unsubstantiated…however, this interpretation remains a powerful intuition as to the inspiration behind Schiele’s sometimes disturbing work.

At one point, Schiele studied under Klimt, which may be obvious from the style adopted in his painting from that time. And while am a lover of Klimt’s work…I prefer Schiele, when he was doing Schiele…dirty, nasty, raw…HUMAN.

I think Schiele, himself, understood his work best (not a quality common in all artists) when he commented:

“Art cannot be modern. Art is primordially eternal.”

This, I think, gets to the heart of the matter…

Schiele’s work sheds the pretty dressing of society and culture and shows us…who we would be…primal, raw, base.

Have a great weekend nymphobrainiacs! xxx c.

I wanted to take a minute to introduce you to a like-minded and extremely talented young woman, an artist and fellow-blogger with a distinct attitude and style that embodies both sexiness AND strength! I think her self-introduction does her justice: "To keep things basic I have a big heart, a loud mouth, a passion to dance my troubles away and I’m painter, artist, whichever one you prefer. I have pushed myself to make the name Minxinx not only to stand out but to ‘wow’ you. Over the years this character has evolved into so much more. Being plastered on walls, canvases, bags, t- shirts, and naked women. Yes, a naked woman on a naked woman. So here I am, ready to move this forward. I am willing, driven, and most definitely in control… and no one can stop me." -- PLEASE CHECK OUT HER BLOG and support her artwork...which is ALL UP for sale! This is the artist with her work...which is pretty fantastic: She is currently doing a series called "Mini You" which she describes:

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the mini sketches I draw of my outfits. I’m getting many requests that you guys want your own. So of course I aim to please. I’ll charge a small fee of $5 for each. A tiny sketch, nothing fancy. Starting now if you would like to have your own mini-you all you have to do is this: * Email me at 2minxinx@gmail.com  * Include a picture of yourself from head to toe * Subject: Mini You I’ll respond with how to make the payment and I’ll get started right away! A new exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art celebrates the female Surrealists of the United States and Mexico.  According to the museum, "While their male counterparts usually cast women as objects for their delectation, female Surrealists delved into their own subconscious and dreams, creating extraordinary visual images.  Their art was primarily about identity:  portraits, double portraits, self-referential images, and masquerades that demonstrate their trials and pleasures."  Works by Frida Kahlo, Muriel Streeter, Remedios Varo are represented and the exhibition runs through May 6th at the Resnick Pavilion.

I Am Nude, Now it’s YOUR Turn…

I often get asked about the erotic art projects I have had the pleasure of being a small part of. I think the biggest misconception about erotic art is that it is about perfection. It is not, at least not the really articulate images. No, the best images capture moments, feelings, imperfections, sensuality.

Erotic art is about stripping down to your soul…not just your clothing.

These images are are from a single two hour shoot for http://www.nudephotographybasics.com. They are very simple and largely unaltered. I have little makeup on. I present them to you as a study. A study of form. A sample of imperfection. A reflection of feeling. The embodiment of personality.

They are me.

They are mine.

And they are more than that.

They are art.

Interpretation.

They are raw, and yet soft.

Perfectly, imperfect.

When I view them, I feel detached…a vulnerable.

And…proud.

Proud that I was able to go there, expose myself…be open enough to express something without pretense.

Proud that my body can speak so eloquently, when too often words fail to express the innermost me…

These images bring up many emotions for me, but the most salient right now…I feel grateful. Grateful to the artist, technology, concept, etc. that allowed for the production on this shoot…but ALSO for FREEDOM. I am grateful that I feel free to express myself as I choose and that other’s may also relate, find a connection…even be inspired to EXPRESS IN YOUR OWN WAY.

Lofty goals…I am aware, but sometimes it takes extreme actions to inspire change…expression…ART!

With that…I challenge you my creative friends…PUSH YOURSELF IN YOUR MANNER OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION…DARE TO EXPERIMENT…BE VULNERABLE…

DARE TO BE *NAKED*

it is…a revealing experience!

danae – egon schiele (via SPACE IN TEXT)…Twisted & Tortured Beauty.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter and a protégé, as well as would be successor of Gustav Klimt (“The Kiss“…a personal favorite). He came into his own in the art world in the early 20th century. Schiele’s moody work is noted for its intensity, and the many self-portraits the artist produced. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele’s paintings and drawings mark his work as expressionistic.

While I am no art-historian or even technically knowledgeable…his work has ALWAYS touched me. I was first introduced to his paintings in an undergraduate class that focused on several prominent artists and their psychology. Schiele was, by far, the most compelling personality we focused on. He had a particularly strained relationship with his mother and an incestuous one with his sister, primary attachments which clearly influenced his art and depiction of both himself and his “mother” in his work.

He was a psychologically tortured man…who expressed that pain, touchingly…often disturbingly…in his art…his work whispers to the twisted and yet vividly plain…confusion in us all…which makes it truly powerful.

Hope you look up and enjoy his work as much as I…I will post a few more today…xxx c.
