The first vibrator was invented in the Victorian era to aide in the treatment of “hysteria”- meaning, of the “womb”. Originally “hysteria” designated a link between certain nervous disorders and diseases of the female sexual and reproductive organs. It was thought that there was a direct connection between these physical pathologies localized in the female organs and certain nervous symptoms. Treatment meant inducing “hysterical paroxysm” or orgasm. It was found that this could be an arduous task and thus, one of the first vibrators was a steam-powered device called the “Manipulator”, which was created by American physician George Taylor, M.D. This machine was a rather awkward device, but was still heralded as some relief for the doctors who found themselves suffering from fatigued wrists and hands. Doctors of the day felt that this method of treatment (“vulvular stimulation”) had nothing to do with sex.
